Why Brass Lockets Make Great Gifts

By Rena Hudson

The giving of brass lockets are a sure way to make that special someone happy. There are plenty of other gift ideas out there but few of them are as long lasting as this. Probably as long as people have been giving presents to each other they have been trying to find new and creative ways to show how much they care. Items that reflect that type of sentiment and show a more romantic side are a great way to go.

There is a limitless supply of choices that are available for purchase or special manufacture from many different artisans. It all depends on just how special a gift is desired. This sort of item is often customized with very little additional time involvement. They come in all kinds of styles, sizes and shapes to suit every taste.

What shape to have is a good place to start in the decision making process. The usual shapes that someone might consider are often readily available. If nothing seems appropriate there is always the specially made route to choose. It might cost a little more but gives more options. Size is another thing to think about but it too can be what is easily available or made to order. Reflecting on the style and age of the recipient will aid in making the right choice.

Now the more specific design items can be looked at. Of those engraving is a common choice. This can be as simple as a name or initials. It can also be as elaborate as a special symbol, quote or phrase that has a special meaning. Some lockets can be purchase with designs such as flowers, hearts or swirls already engraved upon them.

A lot of folks decide to put an item of importance within the locket. It might be a photograph of the giver and receiver together or maybe just one of themselves. It could also be as easy as some sand from the beach or a piece of hair. The petal from a meaningful flower would work too.

A minute spool of paper with a prayer or poem written upon it might be an item to be placed inside the locket. A little piece of fabric saturated with perfume or cologne can serve as a reminder of a time, place or person. The selections for the filling are boundless. The size and imagination are the deciding factor.

In days gone by these keepsakes have been used as a holder for the remains of the departed. Ashes or a remnant of wardrobe could be used or any item that had sentimental value. Some have used this as a way to remember an animal of theirs that has passed away and these vessels can sometimes be found at the funeral parlor for purchase.

Brass lockets have been given as gifts throughout history. They often become part of the family estate and are given from one member of the family to another. If this is not an existing tradition then it is one well worth considering and starting as anyone who has been on the giving or receiving end of such an item will attest to.
