Make Your Own Custom Jewelry Displays

By Mara Boone

If you happen to design and display your own jewelry at fairs, craft fairs, malls or wherever, it is probably more convenient to make sure it is displayed in a fashion that shows it off and protects it. You can actually in a short time create custom jewelry displays, ones that even have their own locks on them.

An easy way to make your own display case is to go out and purchase two picture frames which are the same size. These frames will serve as the body of your case. When you are ready to put it together remove the cardboard that comes with the frames and then clean the glass. After the glass is clean take epoxy the glass to the frames and let it dry.

After the glue has dried put the frames on top of one another with glass on top and bottom. Take the longer side of the bottom frame and measure three inches from the edge and mark that spot with a pencil. Now, do the same thing on the other edge. Repeat this with the top of the frame.

You will need hinges and screws to enable your case to have a door. You will start with the bottom frame and use either a screwdriver or a drill to attach the first hinge to the case and then do the same with the other hinge. Place the other frame on top of this one and screw your hinges into it making sure both frames are totally flush.

Take a ruler and find what is going to be the center of your case on the edge that is opposite of your hinges. Take a pencil and mark this spot. You will need to have purchased a locking box lid latch that comes with a key to use for your display case. Make sure that you unlock the latch before you attach it to your case. Take the hardware that comes with the lock and attach it securely to your frames and line it up with the latch so the case will close and lock properly.

Now the case is ready to have the insert put in. The insert is what you will hang the all the jewelry on. Take a piece of cardboard cut to size to fit inside. If you kept the cardboard that came with the frames, you can use it. Get some cotton batting and fit it on top of the cardboard and glue it securely down. It is best to use a hot glue gun for this step. Take fabric of your choice and wrap it over the cardboard and batting and glue into place and let dry.

It is important to note that you may want to drill the holes for your lock and hinges prior to attaching your glass to your frames. By doing this, you will help prevent any damage to the glass.

You might want to paint the frames a color of your choice so you should consider doing this well before you begin the actual construction of your custom jewelry displays. This way you can avoid getting any paint on the hardware you attached.
