Making Shattered Glass For Marble Jewlery

By Liliana Mills

Gems aren't the only thing that gives jewelry a sparkling and shimmering effect. Marbles have been a preferred bead in the jewelry making business for decades for this very reason. The exquisite effect of shattered or "fried" effect creates unbelievable marble jewelry art.

Artists, over time, have also learned the heating and cooling process required in marble frying to create the desired shattering. By doing so, they have put together delicate and intrinsically unique displays of jewelry art. Many use the simple procedure of heating the marbles on their own home stoves.

The type of marble chosen, prior to frying, will determine shattering effects later. Some desire to achieve a tiger eye effect, with others would like a more subtle, constant color effect. The style, size and color of the marble will determine final results. Marbles appropriate for frying are made of real glass, not simulated glass. Simulated plastic glass will not fry, they melt.

Before beginning the heating process make sure you have collected glasses or goggles, have placed them firmly on your face. Collect plastic gloves, a heat pad, and a utensil to place the marbles in the ice water. Prepare ice water enough to cover the marbles.

Also collect materials before beginning. Needed will be glasses or goggles, placed on your face to protect your eyes. Wear cloth gloves, and collect a heat pad. Collect a utensil for removing marbles from frying pan, and a pot or pan for the ice water. Marbles should be heated to medium to high heat. Turn marbles gently when frying.

Never use cooking oil to fry marbles. Oil can spatter, and can cause the marbles to explode. The skillet should remain dry while the marbles are frying. They should fry 15-20 minutes. While the marbles are frying prepare a pot of ice water, deep enough to cover the marbles.

Amount of shattering results will always depend on how hot the marbles are when placed in the ice water as it is the process of going from hot to cold that determines the amount of shattering. For this reason allow them to fry for the required time. Only remove them and place them in ice water when they are ready.

If you are unsure how to fry marbles safely you can consult a professional, or buying them at a stores is also fairly easy. If you do it yourself, try not to bend over the pot too much and also refrain from pouring the marbles into the ice water. Lower them into the water by the utensil to prevent the possibility that one might burst and glass might go into the air. Set aside until they cool.

When they are no longer hot your shattered glass is ready to be placed in marble jewelry settings. Some popular settings are charm bracelets, charms, sweater and coat pin settings, necklace and earring sets, bracelets and rings. They can also be used to create accessories on cell phone chains.
