The 7 Most Bulky Uncut Diamond Ever Mined

By Daniel Anderson

One day while surfing the internet, I saw some very big and wonderful diamonds in very beautiful settings. I looked at my right hand and saw my own, personal solitaire diamond ring. I suddenly remembered the day my special guy asking me the big question. He gave me this lovely diamond ring. Several years later, he revealed that he painstakingly selected the band from an incredible assortment of diamond engagement rings uk. Since he presented me that diamond ring, I became a diamond lover.

Real diamonds are the best gemstones. It's okay with me to see a diamond with assorted colors in different settings. I would be glad to obtain a diamond in a necklace, a set of earrings, a ring, pendant, brooch, or bracelet. Or in any other setting devised by man as long as the diamond's luster and shine can be clearly seen. Since I am already surfing the net, I will make a list containing the seven biggest rough diamonds mined all over the world. The one that takes the crown is the Cullinan diamond, which weighed at an amazing 3,106.75 carats. In 1905 Thomas Evan Powell found the gemstone and named it after the the owner of Premier Mine in South Africa, Sir Thomas Cullinan. The stone was cut in two by the Asscher Brothers. The larger piece was called Cullinan 1, or the Great Star of Africa, and Cullinan 2 was named the Lesser Star of Africa. These two stones are now part of United Kingdom's Crown Jewels.

Excelsior Diamond was the second largest diamond. It was spotted by Kaffir in 1893 in Jagersfontein Mine situated in South Africa. The stone weighed 970 carats during discovery. Third in line is the 968.9-carat Star of Sierra Leone. The Star of Sierra Leone is thought to be part of a bigger stone that was cut to 17 pieces, 13 of which are flawless. The "Star of Sierra Leone brooch" has six of the flawless diamonds from the uncut stone.

The Incomparable Diamond, which was discovered in the Democratic Republic of Congo, is the fourth biggest diamond. It weighted more than 890 carats in its rough state. The fifth largest diamond is the Great Mogul Diamond, which was found around 1650 in southern India. In its rough state, the stone weighed 787.5 carats. The Mogul Diamond was a present to the Emperor of India Shah Jahan. It was this emperor who built the Taj Mahal as a masoleum for his wife. Jean Baptiste Tavernier, a famous jeweler described the stone as "The stone is of the same form as if one cut an egg through the middle."

The Millennium Star is the sixth largest rough diamond weighing 777 carats before it was cut by the Steinmetz Diamond Group. The stone was discovered in Zaire in 1990. Presently, De Beers has the stone. The seventh largest rough diamond is the Golden Jubilee, which weighs at 755.5 carats. It was extracted in South Africal's Premier Mine.
