Skull Rings And Their Roots

By Jeremiah Taylor

Throughout the ages the skull has embodied death and our own short life span and is still viewed in this modern era as a powerful symbol. In long ago the victors in any war would behead foes to display on stakes as a potent representation of their victory over the enemy, to create fear and to lower enemy spirits.

Gothic rings were popular as far back as the sixteenth century and have persisted to the present, rising to popularity as fashion accessories for stars such as Angelina Jolie and Britney Spears. More commonly skull rings can be seen on the well-manicured hands of people in the goth scene and bikers alike.

The early introduction of the skull ring can be found in the annals of the cartoon hero, The Phantom, who wore a skull ring, symbol of strength, protection and mortality. This powerful hero's enemies all had the mark of the skull upon their jaws, where The Phantom had left his mark whilst dealing out justice in the form of his powerful punches.

Military forces havealso used skull ring as a symbol of power. It was featured prevalently in the uniforms of the German SS troops and was also adopted by the British Grenadiers. The skull is a representation of mortality and perhaps judgment, an inescapable aspect of life that we cannot run away from. The theme here run deep for humanity. Our only certainty aside from being borninto this world is that we will pass away in the end. What we do with the time in between those two events is what makes us lesser or greater males or women.

We are reminded of our own mortality and that only we are in charge of our destinies. The skull ring has represented the powers of death, annihilation and transmutation over the past centuries. It signifies the end of old cycles and the dark side of mankind.

Pop culture these days has romanticized the emblem of the skull as a mighty force. For example the cool anti-hero, Ghost Rider. He is a man who by night transforms into the Satan's bounty hunter, sent to collect the souls of evil males to throwthem to Hell. He has a fiery skull for a face, his steed is an enchanted motorcycle with a skull headlamp.

These icons in the modern era appeal to our internal sense of moral justice and further romanticize the skull's image. Naturally as generations go by, the ideal is lost to myth and legend and only a vague sense of the basic idea remains. This is much the case with the skull ring, which manifested in many versions throughout different cultures.

As observed with the German SS troops and the British Grenadiers, the skull ring was used to utilized to build a sense of togetherness among a particular group. Soldiers and warriors would quickly identify with this symbol as death is never more than a moment away at the battlefield. The skull ring represents an ever present reminder of our mortality.
