A Concise History of Charm Bracelets

By Anita Hale

The importance and characteristics of charm bracelets has changed over the course of the years. During the war, troops tended to invest in charms as a gift for their relatives. These were simple charms crafted by a local. They were bought to be preserved and displayed as a souvenir of a soldier's tour of duty. The Nineteen Fifties saw charm bracelets become the it-thing with children. They enjoyed collecting different charms to reflect special occasions that occurred while growing up.

The most current batch of charm bracelets are typically made in Europe. Denmark seems to be the most popular country for charm manufacturers. This revolution in charm bracelets began with a Danish company called Trollbeads in the 1970s.These bracelets were distinguishable from the old ones thanks to the new way charms fitted onto the bracelet. Charms were now machined with a hole in the middle so that they could slide onto a snake chain. This varied from the old style of charm which always hung down from the bracelet. Pandora was really the market leader in taking this idea and patenting it. What Pandora did was to develop bracelets and charms with threads on them, much like you would find on a screw in a hardware store. These threads meant that Pandora charms would not fit onto rival branded bracelets. These threads also ensured that charms could be fitted onto the bracelet without fear of sliding off.

In addition, the majority of charm makers provide various clips and spacers. A clip is a smaller sized charm that stays in a fixed placement on the bracelet. It is a way the customer can grouping charms together on their bracelet. These new forms of charm design are employed by companies such as Links of London, Aagaard and Lovelinks.

Even though most charm companies come from Denmark, the fashion for this jewellery extends as far as North America. The chief lure of these newer charm mechanisms is the versatility they allow the wearer. Bracelets are still available as chain links. But these usually only accommodate a restricted selection of dangling charms. The snake chain bracelets are by far the most popular. These can be bought in silver or gold. However, you can now also buy charm bracelets made out of leather and different coloured string.

The charms themselves are also made from a selection of different materials. The price of an individual charm will vary greatly because of this. The most common charms are ones made from sterling silver. But there are also charms made out of glass, wood and 14 carat gold.
