How to Keep Your Jewellery Looking New

By Anita Hale

If you are a lover of jewellery then you will want to know the quick and easy way to maintain it and make sure it continues to be as pristine as the day it was bought. Keep reading for some easy advice on how to care for your necklaces, bracelets and rings.

To begin with, just about all jewellery will suffer from usage during its lifespan. Sadly, this is inescapable. But it is possible to substantially cut back on this deterioration by limiting the situations in which you wear your jewellery. Make sure to take off rings, necklaces and bracelets prior to bedtime to avoid accidental scuffing. Sweating could also cause discoloration of most metals and so it is best to remove metal jewellery when playing sport. There are also other chemicals that it's best to keep separate from your jewellery. These are present in hair spray, perfume and nail polish remover. So don't let your jewellery come into contact with any of these.

And now a few words oxidised metals. These have become increasingly more fashionable to use in jewellery design. However, they require unique attention to successfully maintain their black appearance. Never let your oxidised jewellery come into contact with chlorine. In fact, the same rule also applies for gold and silver jewellery. Don't use silver polish to spruce them up either. This will weaken the effect of the oxidation. This recommendation can also be applied to pearls.

On the flip side, you will want to take care to avoid oxidation from transpiring in all your regular jewellery. This is because oxidation generates tarnishing and staining in metal. The process can occur when certain sulphur compounds come into contact with silver. These compounds are sometimes found in salad dressings, synthetic detergents and certain forms of rubber. So make sure you always keep your jewellery away from these things.

You can get rid of tarnish with some special silver polish, but be careful about which ones you use. There are some silver polishes that are abrasive and could end up spoiling your jewellery further. As an alternative, for regular cleaning begin using a special silver polishing cloth. In order to get rid of dirt, rinse in lukewarm water with soap. And if you really need to get stuck into the little intricate nooks then simply use a toothbrush.

Last of all, it's worth remembering that pure metals are a lot less scratch resistant because of their softness. Expensive gold is therefore very soft. But low purity metals are combined with a larger density of alloys which renders them tougher and more durable. This is why you should never mix your metals. That means avoid wearing gold rings next to cheaper ones or else they could get scratched.
