Jewelry: What You Need To Know

By Laura U Purginton

If you simply must have a new ring, necklace, or pair of earrings but cannot afford to spend thousands, you should spend a whole day visiting local pawn shops in the area. Pawn shops are notorious for offering excellent and affordable deals on pre-owned jewelry and generally are required to certify and verify the quality of stones and metals in each piece.

If you are stuck on what gift to buy for a female, jewelry always works. Make sure you know what size the intended person wears in rings and necklaces before making your purchase. There is nothing worse than purchasing a nice piece of jewelry that doesn't fit the intended recipient. Do your research before making your purchase.

If you are using bleach or other household cleaners, remove your jewelry first. The chemicals contained in these cleaners can ruin the luster on your precious gems. They can also discolor gold and silver. Put your favorite jewelry in a safe place and then get on with your cleaning project.

When buying gemstones, look for synthetic, rather than imitation. Imitations gems are just colored pieces of glass. In time, the color will chip and fade because they are not made to last. Synthetic gemstones are real gemstones, they are just grown inside a laboratory. They can be a more affordable option than natural gemstones too, and just as attractive.

Never use bleach to clean your jewelry. Not only is bleach going to make your item permanently discolored and can damage its original appearance, but the bleach will cause a reaction with the metal that will weaken the strength of the item. Also keep away from items that have acetone and ammonia as they too will harm your jewelry items.

Take special care of your opals. Opals are delicate gems and can be discolored, scratched, or otherwise harmed very easily. Avoid exposing them to direct sunlight as this can discolor them. Never use an ultrasonic cleaner or expose them to high levels of heat as this can ruin their luster.

Jewelry is a very personal item, and picking a nice peace is largely a subjective decision. You should examine your tastes and decide whether you would like to spend you allotted budget on a few nice pieces or on many pieces of lower quality.
