Don't Lose the Stone

By Margot Liu

One of the best occasions in a woman's life is that romantic evening when her special gentleman presents her with the finest of unique engagement rings. The engagement ring that the lady receives is a concrete and tasteful affirmation that the guy wants to live the rest of his life with her. It's a symbol of true, eternal love. And for the woman, the ring signifies her recognition of the man's desire to live with and love her forever.

No doubt that a diamond engagement rings band is a very special item. And just like nurturing a relationship, it is essential to take good care of the jewellery item. Even if the sentimental value is not included, an engagement ring is still a substantial investment that needed a lot of the gentleman's time, effort, and savings.

One of the worst nightmares that can occur is when the wearer loses the stone that is set on the ring. Usually, the loss gets unnoticed, and people don't realize that one or several of the diamonds are lost until it is too late. Rings that are inlaid with small diamonds are usually the "victims" of such loss. However, diamonds affixed on other sorts of mounts are at risk. Pave-set diamonds can very easily drop off. Invisible-set gems can also fall since the invisible-set setting doesn't hold the stones firmly. Channel settings, while strong, can also fail especially if the channel is broken.

There are various factors that contribute to such a loss. For example, the stone may be pried loose when the ring hits a hard object one time too many. The diamond may become dislodged when the mountings are broken. Or, the adhesive that holds the diamond to the mount may become weak.

Because a diamond engagement ring has high emotional and fiscal value, it is just sensible to make certain that they are securely attached to the mounts at all times. Check out a couple of useful guidelines to do this.

1. Touch the diamond on the setting and give it a light push. If it moves, even if the shift is rather slight, then have the diamond re-affixed by an expert jeweller.

2. Check the prongs and mounting setup. If the mount is worn, damaged, or bent, chances are, the diamond will get pushed off. Mounts that are made from soft metal such as silver or gold are quite fragile. If you notice any damage or deformity, have the ring mended by a pro jewller.

3. Avoid wearing your diamond ring if you're doing a physically intensive task such as tending the garden, cleaning the house, or taking part in sporting activities. The diamond may come out when the ring is subjected to violent and sudden movements or hits.

4. Do not wear the diamond ring if you are about to handle chemicals, household products, and detergents. Not only will these substances tarnish the metal setting but they may also weaken the glue that fixes the diamond to the mount. In the same way, never wear your ring if you're swimming in the pool or out in the sea. Chlorine and salt water, respectively, can certainly damage the setting and weaken the adhesion.

5. Often clean your ring since accumulated dirt can weaken the glue. Also, examine the stone and the mount if you have used ultrasonics to clean your jewellery. That's because the strong ultrasonic vibrations may have loosened up the diamond.
