Caring For Your Natural Stone Jewelry

By Esther Salazar

There are different kinds of jewelries people can use to adorn their clothes and body. Although precious metals are beloved by all, many are now into wearing natural stone jewelry. You can now see a lot of people wearing bangles, necklaces, and earrings made out of beautiful stones. These types of accessories are very popular because of vibrant and chic they look like.

Any jewelry would become worn over time especially when worn frequently by the owner. Another reason would be the lack of maintenance. The only way to keep jewelries sparkling is to give them the care they need. The basic way to care for jewelries is to clean them. This is done to get rid of oil, sweat, and dirt that could damage the surface. Cleaning, however, differs depending on the material used.

When cleaning jewelries made from natural stones, you should be considerate of the substances that you are going to use. Do not apply anything if you are not sure if it is safe or not. When in doubt, the safest substance you can use is water for it will not degrade or do something with the colors. Anything harsh should be avoided.

Be very careful with the way that you will treat your jewelries. Do not place them in any place that you like when you want to take them off already. Another big mistake some people do is to leave their jewelries in their pocket or bag. Jewelries should be placed back in their rightful place to avoid misplacing and damaging them.

If you want the jewelries to last, there has to be an appropriate storage place where you can keep then. Jewelries need proper storage in the form of a box or a case that could protect them from the heat, moisture, and light. Stone jewelries in particular should be wrapped in tissue or a soft cloth to avoid cuts and scratches.

Stone jewelries are also less resistant to pressure or impact. For this reason, you have to be very careful when handling one. Dropping the accessory will break it especially if the surface is very hard. If your accessory is made from a very large stone, dropping it on a tiled floor may lead to the floor getting cracked or chipped.

For those jewelries that have more than stones in them, the owner also needs to know how to deal with other materials present. A good example would be animal materials such as ivory, bone, and antler. One thing to remember about animal materials is they are do not do well when exposed to moisture, heat, and cold.

If the material used is plant based, one also needs to give the material a lot of attention. When dealing with a wooden material, just remember that wood can easily absorb any liquid and should always be kept dry. There are also natural oils you can use to maintain the wood.

Any fashionable person should own one or two natural stone jewelry. This is an accessory that is worth having in your closet. It is fun to have different kinds of accessories so you can have more style options.
