Preparing The Perfect Pageant Jewelry

By Rachael Gutierrez

Entering a beauty pageant is an exciting process, and so is putting together your outfit. But even though your dress is likely at the top of your mind, your pageant jewelry is just as important. You will be judged on every small detail, from the color of your dress to the accessories that go with it. Even the tiniest change can make the difference between a sleek look and a cluttered mess.

Many pageants have specific rules regarding the jewelry that can be worn, so take this into consideration during your search. That way, you can avoid setting your heart on a piece that you just aren't allowed to use. Any important regulations should be mentioned when you sign up, but you can also check the rules on the pageant's website or book of guidelines. Remember to double check them one last time before you finalize the outfit, just to see if you made any mistakes.

Any accessories that you choose should draw attention to key parts of the outfit, without being too flamboyant. In many cases, a small, delicate pendant can have more impact than a large, gaudy necklace. If you think it might be too much, it probably is; keep every piece low key, while still making sure that it looks good on the wearer.

Price is an important consideration; if the jewelry is for a smaller completion, you probably don't want to go all out on it. Consider renting or purchasing a used piece, if price is a concern. After all, it's only going to be worn for a single night.

Remember to make sure that the accessories you choose match the rest of your outfit, even if they aren't part of a set. A pair of earrings can go with a necklace if the metal and stones are the same, but if the differences are glaring, you should choose something else. Likewise, the colors and shapes should work with the dress that you choose, not against it.

Skin tone is important to keep in mind as you shop for the right piece. Darker or warm skin tones tend to go well with golds, while lighter and cooler skin tones usually pair with platinum or silver. This rule isn't completely solid, but it makes a good general guideline.

The amount of accessories you choose to wear is up to you. However, when designing an elegant pageant outfit, less is often more. Instead of putting on as many ornaments as you can find, try to choose one or two simple pieces that really show off your best features and compliment your look.

Before the competition, make sure that everything is properly polished and repaired. Metals should shine, chains should be unbent, and stones should be without chips. Even if the judges don't notice a tiny flaw directly, there's still a chance that it will cause them to deduct points.

Whatever pageant jewelry you choose, make sure that you can feel confident wearing it. When you walk out on that stage, you should be able to do so with a genuine smile. The better you feel in your outfit, the easier it will be for you impress the judges and be true to yourself.
